Apply them as well they do really help these oils and potions also are practically unlimited because once you use them all up you can just meditate and you will have a new batch ready for use armor and weaponry is also very important in this game there are four rarity types in the witcher 3 there's common master magic and relic is the highest rarity. However rarity really just determines some of the bonuses and rune slots you get for swords and armor and doesn't actually really have much of an effect on the overall damage absorption or damage output there's also three types of armor which are light medium. Heavy i'd recommend heavy armor it gives you the most protection to attacks and the only downsides are slower movement speed and you have more weight to your inventory which doesn't really matter much since there's no real loss in being slightly slower in this game you are of course always going to want to use the armor that has the best armor stat as well.
Now armor can be improved with something called glyphs that give you small boost to your spells damage etc don't even bother buying these glyphs because they are quite expensive and they are pretty easy to find and you are going to be switching armor very quickly throughout this game so they're likely going to be put to waste anyway it's pretty much the same deal with runes except they go on your sword and can increase things like critical chance or chances to son along with causing things like freezing or burning effects on your enemies when you hit them now the best skills and upgrades you're going to want to make in this game. I would say is to your combat and spells for combat I would definitely recommend acquiring and upgrading the increased damage to light attack as soon as possible and for spells i would go with quinn or axey.
